M is for My Amazing, Talented Artist Friend

Dear Holly,

You. Are. Awesome.  I am in awe of your mad art skills and so grateful to you for doing the artwork. I love it and keep staring at it in a very giddy fashion. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your talent and drawing this.

Love,
Laura

This is Anathriel Lelaine, a character from my book, Awakenings.

*I had not had an M post planned for today, and then Holly sent me this. *continues to stare*  I can't draw--seriously, stick figures are all I've got--and there's something amazing about seeing my characters on paper (or computers) and not just in my head.  Can you draw?  If so, do you draw your characters and does that help you write them?

  1. Hi!

I like to draw, but I don't usually put to much detail on my characters, I just emphasize what's relevant. In my current WIP, the eyes of the MC is the key, so that's what I focus, not the whole body.

Your friend is really very talented. Congrats!

  2. I love the picture! I wrote a children's story and did illustrations about 20 years ago. I found the story and pictures in a file drawer last year and laughed so hard. I showed my kids - they busted out into laughter. I am no artist, but I'm glad I tried just that once. :)

  3. Dear Laura,

You are very welcome and I am honored to be friends with someone as amazing and talented as you are! Thank you for sharing your imagination with the rest of us, and don't ever stop!

also, to answer your questions: Yes. Sikka never would have come to be if I hadn't drawn her, so, for me, sketching my characters out helps form them in my head.

  4. Beautiful drawing! I don't draw, just write and take pictures. I would love to have drawings of my characters, though. Some day. I did draw a rather horrible map of the village in my book, though.

Also, I did a shout out to you on my blog with an award.

  5. I used to draw and paint quite a bit but I am out of practice. Now I rely on my daughter who is artistic. She did the cover art for my second book.

  7. How exciting to see your characters and work come to life like that!

I can draw a bit. I loved doing it as a kid. I would create whole epic stories (in my head)complete with artwork (on paper). I did manage to complete a story about a girl in India when I was 10 or 11 that was completely illustrated. Pretty good if I say so myself. (Self- congratulatory pat on the back) lol

  8. Beautiful drawing! I draw, but I'm so out of practice that I don't even think of attempting to draw my characters.

  9. It's an awesome drawing! I agree, it must strange to suddenly see your characters with someone else's eyes... Love it!

  11. EEV-That's a great way to go about it! I can't even draw eyes, but I imagine it would tell you a lot about the characters.

Tonja-That's awesome!! I don't have any of my old stories; it must have been so much fun to find something you wrote and illustrated!

fairheartstrife-*HUGE HUGS* And I'm glad you draw your characters, because it helps me visualize their awesomeness that much more.

Shannon-My maps for my stories are all simple things thrown together in Paint, LOL. And thank you so much for the award/shout out!

Sherri-How great that you and your daughter share that artistic talent, and that she did the cover for your book!

    Ruth-Thank you! She is AMAZING.

Rebecca-It's so awesome to see characters in my head actually on paper (or computer). That is SO NEAT that you can draw and that you did a whole illustrated book when you were so young! Do you still have it?

Misha-It's fantastic that you can draw at all, though!

    wordyliving-Thank you so much!

Monica-Thank you; she's so very, very talented. Thanks for the follow!
